I had a busier night that usual since I wasn’t glued to my computer yesterday. It was a most relaxing evening nontheless. This morning was a little more of a challenge, I ate some marinated food yesterday and when I woke my stomach hurt. Rolling around to find a comfortable position only the pain worsening, resulting in me ending up in a sweaty ball on the floor of my bathroom. I should have gone with my instinct in my initial dislike of the marinated olives. Better now, but I felt bad about missing my daily art blog post. I have part of it saved so I will post that tonight for you to peruse at your leisure.

Free Sheep Foundation – Hallway . From 11.26.2008 SEA SHOW SHOOT

This is an introduction to a new facet of our daily blog. We hope to start releasing 1 to 2 short videos a month. Since many of these are part of longer pieces, can be multicamera shoots, its difficult to manage releasing them a lot, but we will strive to include some of these. In the coming days you will see video for this week’s show, and a preview of what you can expect to see more of this Thursday night, when the painter Dr. JohnnyWOW! gives us another installment of his talk/performance art.

If you haven’t visited our youtube site, please visit or sign up and become a subscriber and know the instant I upload a video. Chances are, it is 6am and you are still in bed when that message hits your mailbox. Better yet, subscribe to my RSS feed and get my blogs the moment they happen and cut out the middle man.

There is so much energy at artwalk each month, I’ll be glad to get back into it this month. In two days, I’m excited to visit 619 Western and say hello to Dr. JohnnyWOW!, who will debut the latest incarnation of his artistic approach. There will of course be a recording of this, and we’ll be showing video of the artist giving his talk earlier this month that night too. Video everywhere. Too much fun.

This blog will be part local adventures in emerging art forms, part news commentary. I still don’t visit any site with regularity, but my small numbers are steady day to day, so as we increase our readership and I get better at making sense and choosing good topics, you’ll see things improve.

The first vlogs you will see are works-in-progress for recent shows and upcoming events, like the one I’ll be showing video at and taping at this Thursday, December 4th. After that you’ll see more segments of 28 minutes episodes I plan on submitting to SCAN TV. The next four weeks will be crazy, but I think it will be fun to watch & read.

next things I have planned:

Catergories (You can see lists of blog entries group by subject)

vlogs

Giveaways (Sorry, no dates, just freebies)

Whether you’re a new subscriber, just found this on a search, or have been quietly watching us for months, you will enjoy this blog.

Art Basel – l’herbe royale

It is 5am on the west coast but I get art new as it breaks, so all these articles on Basel and the economy so I’m inspired to get my blog(s) in for the day.  I like that they’re pushed to my phone, if I’m not in front of my computer I can close my Twitterberry window and check out my alerts.

I like it when I get routed away from the usual art blogs and into websites like the financial times, that talk about what is without a doubt one of the major concerns at Miami Basel aside from Art, that being the spending that goes on there. Honestly, I’m not trying to stir up some contraversy here in the disparities of the Contemporary Art world and the day to day challenges in the life of your struggling artist. I wasn’t the first to think of these events as exclusive, Art Nexus said it first.

I’m sure there are many who have visited Artipedia before but I like the layout and it seems like a cool site with Basel related updates, so check it out for some upcoming exhibitions.

artparty

I happened upon this one while searching for images of a Miami Art Party. I visited the site of a group that is throwing fringe parties. The pull of Miami Art Basel 2008 is undeniable, even for the most humble of us.

The many reviews and articles I come across related to this event seem to vary a great deal, their commentary flavored with the assumptions on who writes them. Some writers are obviously fans, while others don’t do a very good job of hiding their distaste for the particular artist of musician they are reviewing.

While I am definitely a fan of promoting events with exceptional details, the sense of that must accompany such a gathering is certainly a draw for some, and these upcoming articles only add to the anticipation for many. In fact, the article that I had read last year on Miam Art Basel 2007 was in the November issue of the Smithsonian Magazine.

The article in question is not the very interesting article I have included here, but it was a mutli-page spread in the print version of the magazine on the event that sent my mind to thinking as I began to consider what impact this event has on the state of art overall, and what it represents for the underground artists and unarticulated forms I encounter in my work with The SEA SHOW.

Of course I couldn’t attend then and there, but this event plagues me like some strange prize like a satin sash in a beauty contest. I want to see cutting edge art forms get to that other place.

I want people to see aperson creating many forms of art simultaneously, and presenting them together, and have a context in which to understand it, have an opportunity to enjoy such speculation, to venture a new interpretation.

I see something raw, and beautiful in art that has no audience, art that exists in spite of any obstacles. This is an emerging art form. I’m not the only person who sees this colassal event as a prism of all the challenges the art world represents to the artist, the Skywalker Parade being an example of this.

Don’t ask me how I stumbled upon this one. Its an art page for WPBT, and it has info and videos on, you guessed it right folks, Miami Art Basel. If you’ve had enough talk about Basel, don’t worry. I have a TON of overall info and commentary on general art topics coming. But the readers want Basel, so I have to give it to them.

I’m also not sure what this guy is up to but it looks like an interesting compendium of modern art, and I’ll definitely be back to visit.

Street art happened to pop up in today’s searches. Coincidentally, there is a lot of excellent art that consists of graffiti and anonymous outdoor paintings.

streetart

When you see murals when you visit places like these in Miami and in the Mission district of San Francisco, you don’t get the feeling that Street Art is the fad that some purport. For years, the city has enjoyed the eager talents of artist who get their art out there unlike any other.

Not sure what exactly this fellow is up to with his blog but its got a bunch of links to all things Miami Art and Contemporary Art, so its worth a click in my humble opinion.

If for some reason you do make it to the art mecca that is Miami during Art Basel 2008, then you might find yourself in a need of a cold drink. Make your way to one of the parties hosting an open bar during their parties during the week. Even the cops are cutting loose in Miami.

If you do by some chance decide at the last minute to go, look on Craigslist for the sublets, or like one of my colleagues, post on twitter that you need a place to stay and hope that you have a devoted enough following to at least get some leads. Or you can look at the suggestions on Frommer’s, which list an alternative housing resource.

I get all sorts of random entries from my art basel alerts. Random blogs, news, accidental art, contraversy..

I thought that this was a pretty sad article. When all I read about Miami Art Basel and its elegant gleam, to come across an artist who poured time and effort into fundraising an installation peice. When you have that much extravgance in the area related to arts in the area year after year, it really makes you wonder why there aren’t more resources to support local artists who would like to be a part of the experience and don’t have the opportunities to be a part of Art Basel.

While I have read and heard many different things about this imminent event, it makes it more challenging to come to a definitive conclusion about what role it plays in the art world, and what the future of Contemporary Art is going to look like. Are events like Miami art basel the reason we don’t see art movements have the impact and clarity they used to? Where are the schools of artists?

I came across an article on Modgiliani in an older issue of Smithsonian magazine on my bookshelf that I hadn’t read yet. Reading about his short but passionate life, it enriched my understanding of art during that time. He was inspired by african sculpture, like Picasso was to have famously, taking it even further with explorations into cubism.

After high school, I read practically every book on impressionism and post-impressionism in the library of the town I grew up in. Reading books on Gauguin, Picasso, Degas, Cezanne, Renior, Manet, and Monet, all of those collective tales and artists influence on one another, vital places like the south of france, all of these places and events gave rise to movements. These artist mentored, competed, and were influenced by one another.  An aritsts work evolves in response to more than individual perceptions, but also to their place and time in art history, his surroundings, and his feelings about art. Where does that alchemy exist today, and what is the related art movement(s)? These are some of the questions I explore in my art show.

While there was only a snippet about anything Basel related in this post, I thought it was an interesting enough rant to include.

Coincidentally, I caught wind of one of these events through one of my Basel tagged news article. I am most intrigued by a band that wants to keep its obscurity. While I am far from achieving enough fame to not have to promote my causes, I understand what might compel one to withdraw. In this world where you can find something about practically anything on the internet, this band’s reclusive nature only intrigues me more. And they’ll be playing a gig at Miami Art Basel 2008. I can’t hold down a lot of PBR but these guys look like they would be fun to hang out with.

Another band I feel that way about is the Klaxons. The maverick delights of these fellows are too many for me to name here. I purchased tickets to both of their shows in Seattle last year, one at the Showbox Sodo and the april show at the Crocodile, which I had never been to. I finally shot a performance there in August 2007 with Sir Mark the Poet. 3klaxons

Since I never have a date, I had to try to find someone to go with me at the last minute and they flaked. The other time, I hadn’t been to the venue and can feel nervous alone in a bar if I can’t hide behind my camera and crew. I hate to have to resort to premature departures. I hope to see them one day.

On the Hook

I was intrigued by a news article that arrived in my inbox about an artist who resorted to what some call extreme measures to express herself in this week’s art news. We are not strangers to artists who like to bring a little intensity to a situation, an immediacy piercing affords. For the artist Alice Newstead, the effort was effective in making the art world know about her efforts. We wholeheartedly understand the frustration of trying to get your audience’s attention. BRITAIN-ANIMALS-PROTEST

For example, I got a last minute call to film an art performance on November 5, 2008, in Portland Oregon, by no one other than the first artist ever to express interest in Arte Vivant,  which was name of the show during the pilot – which was from April 23, 2007 to May 31, 2007.

Dr. JohnnyWOW! finds himself in a strange situation as an artist. picture-72He has a studio, is a full-time artist, retired, and has hundreds of visitors to his art gallery every month. Despite this, he unhappy with the situation, one of the topics of his performance at the BlackBird Wine Shop in Portland.

I’ve learned a lot about him in his frank discussions about the state of art and awareness, and I’ve kept my eyes and ears open to what he has to say. I enjoyed editing this last video because of the humor of the situation.

I’ll post more information about his next show for the December artwalk where we’ll get to see more of his video presentation as well as a live demonstration for the art about his frustration. This seasoned artist resorts to strange but not-so-painful efforts to get some kind of feedback or commentary from his large monthly audience.

When I first read the description of the artist that hung herself in the window of a gallery in a method referred to as Suspension, I immediately thought of the compelling performance which was a visual delight for your humble host to document!

My mental stability and my Canon HV20 survived the show, and while I had a sore back from doing hand held for the entirety of their two night performance, it is some of the best footage I’ve shot. Still working on the edit.

I don’t want to give away too many of the antics of the group since I am actually planning an interview with this organization, whose events I’ve been documenting for most of 2007 as I followed the now disbanded Midway Orchestra, in their adventures of a new band playing for some rather unorthodox performers.

Despite all I saw last summer, nothing quite prepared me for March 15, 2008, when I first filmed a performance by a member of the local Butoh performers Death Posture. I am shooting an event with them and their rather interesting guests soon, and I look forward to this event with great anticipation.
